Attention assessment

T.O.V.A. Test

A standardised, clinically validated computerised test of attention and impulse control — providing objective data to support assessment and planning.

What is T.O.V.A.?

Objective measurement of attention

T.O.V.A. (Test of Variables of Attention) is a computer-based continuous performance test that has been used clinically for over 30 years. Unlike questionnaires or behavioural rating scales, it provides objective, norm-referenced data about how the brain sustains attention over time.

The test presents simple visual stimuli over ~21 minutes. The software analyses four key variables: response time, response time variability, commission errors (impulsivity) and omission errors (inattention).

Results are compared against a large normative database and presented as a detailed report — useful for clinicians, schools and neurofeedback practitioners.

Variables measured

What the test measures

1 Response time

How quickly the person responds to the target stimulus. Unusually slow responses can indicate inattention or processing difficulties.

2 Response time variability

Consistency of response speed across the test. High variability is a hallmark of ADHD and indicates difficulty sustaining attention over time.

3 Commission errors (impulsivity)

Responses made to non-target stimuli. High commission errors point to impulsive response patterns — pressing when you shouldn't.

4 Omission errors (inattention)

Targets that were missed entirely. High omission errors reflect sustained attention failure — not noticing things that should be noticed.

Specialist discussing T.O.V.A. results

Who it's for

When is T.O.V.A. useful?

The T.O.V.A. is relevant whenever there are questions about attention, concentration or impulse control — and objective data would help clarify the picture.

  • Children with suspected or diagnosed ADHD
  • Adults with attention and concentration complaints
  • Before starting a neurofeedback programme (baseline measurement)
  • Mid-programme to measure progress objectively
  • School referral support and documentation
  • Athletes tracking cognitive performance

How it works

The assessment process

1

Briefing

We explain the test and answer any questions. No special preparation is needed — just arrive rested if possible.

2

The test (~21 minutes)

You sit at a computer and respond to simple visual shapes. The task is simple but requires sustained, consistent attention throughout.

3

Results analysis

Our specialist reviews the detailed output report and compares your scores against age-matched norms.

4

Feedback session

We walk you through what the results mean and, where relevant, how they inform a neurofeedback training plan.

Pricing

Service Price
T.O.V.A. test + specialist feedback 85 €

The fee includes the test itself and a results briefing session. It does not include a separate initial assessment if this is your first visit to the centre.
